Category Climb for your team

The board holds categories with questions worth 100 to 500 points, and the higher the value, the harder the question. A right answer adds the value. A wrong one takes it away.

  • Teams or everyone for themselves, answering together or racing to buzz in
  • Answers are typed, not picked from options. Not sure? Passing costs nothing
  • The final is a wager: teams bet their own points on one last question
  • runs on its own, no host
  • join by link or QR
  • browser, no installs
A three-player round on a laptop: pick a question, type the answer, see the reveal

HOW A QUESTION PLAYS

One question in three steps

  1. 01

    Pick a question

Each cell is a category and a value from 100 to 500. The whole room votes on the first one. After that, whoever answered correctly picks next.

  2. 02

    Type the answer

There are no options to choose from: you write it the way you'd say it out loud. Typos and capitalization are forgiven. Not sure? Pass.

  3. 03

    The reveal

The game shows the right answer and what everyone wrote. Right adds the value, wrong subtracts it, and a score can drop below zero.

Once the board is played out, the final begins: teams see only the category, wager part of their points and answer one last question.

FORMATS

Teams, everyone for themselves, or solo

Choose who plays and how they answer. The board works the same way in every format.

  • Teams

Each team answers as one. Answer sends it for the whole team right away. Suggest shows a version to teammates, who back it with a vote.

  • Everyone for themselves

Every player answers every question on their own and plays for their own score.

  • First to buzz in

Instead of everyone answering, players race to a button. The first to buzz answers, and a miss reopens the buzzer for everyone else. Buzzing in and staying silent counts as a miss.

  • Solo

One person takes the questions in any order. The stage score is the share of points collected, so it fits a marathon stage or an advent calendar window.

WHAT MAKES IT WORK

Risk is part of the game

A wrong answer costs the value of the question, so taking a 500 is a decision, not a gift.

  • Wrong answers cost points

A team that takes a 500 and misses loses 500. A team that passes keeps what it has. Turn the penalty off for a lighter game.

  • The final wager

Teams bet up to their own score, and teams that are behind can still bet up to the board's top value. Right adds the bet, wrong burns it.

  • Nobody waits on anyone

After 8 seconds of silence, the version with the most votes goes in. If someone drops off, the vote count adjusts, and rejoining puts them back in the same game.

  • Your categories, your pace

Write questions about your company, product or industry, or keep it to general knowledge. Up to 3 rounds, 6 categories and 5 questions per category.

FAQ

Questions about Category Climb

The board shows categories, each with questions worth 100 to 500 points. Players pick a question and type the answer in words. A right answer adds the value, a wrong one subtracts it, and passing costs nothing. The game ends with a final wager.

No. The game runs the whole round on its own timers: picking, answering, the reveal and the final.

The value of the question is taken off the score, and a score can go below zero. The penalty can be switched off in the settings for a lighter game.

Teams see only the category and decide how many of their points to bet, up to their own score. Teams that are behind can bet up to the board's top value. Then the question opens: right adds the bet, wrong burns it.

Yes. Write categories about your company, product or industry, or use general knowledge. A board holds up to 3 rounds, 6 categories and 5 questions per category.

Nothing. Players join by link or QR code from a phone or laptop, and the game opens in the browser.

It uses the same flat per-event ladder as every HeySparko game, from $550 for up to 15 people. The full ladder, customization and lead times are on the pricing page.
